Bellingham Takes the Series Against Kitsap

It was seller pitching and timely hitting by the Bellingham Bells to defeat the Kitsap BlueJackets 8-3 Saturday from Joe Martin Field.

Bellingham (1-1) wasted no time in giving starting pitcher Jon Olsen (2-2) a comfortable lead to work with.

In the bottom of the first, the Bells were led off with singles from Andru Cardenas, Shane Hanon and Chase Strumpf. David Banuelos bounced into a double play to score Cardenas and Hanon scored on a past ball to give the Bells a 2-0 lead.

Bellingham tagged another run in the second off KItsap (2-3) starter Eli Fultz (1-5). Elijah Skipps walked and came around to score on a Cardenas double.

Kitsap was held scoreless until the sixth inning when Jack Stronach doubled to begin the inning off Olsen. Joey Galeno singled and Stronach scored on a throwing error from first Jake Vieth at first base to pull the BlueJackets within 3-1.

Skipps led the charge in the bottom of the inning drawing a leadoff walk. Gunner Schubert and Cardenas belted back-to-back doubles to drive in a run apiece to give the Bells a 5-1 lead.

Tony Ortiz led off the seventh with single for Kitsap, but Bryce Peterson grounded into a double play. Benny Kaleiwahea walked with two outs, and was followed by a Daniel Lopez double to score Kaleiwahea. Stronach singled to bring in Lopez and Kitsap cut the lead 5-3.

Insurance runs by the Bells were poured on in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Knoll entered the game for Kitsap, walking Strumpf and allowing two singles to Vieth and Danny Casals to load the bases.

John Matros relieved Knoll and hit Skipps to force in a run. Schubert lined a single to score two runs and the Bells held an 8-3 lead the rest of the way.

Olsen tossed six and two-thirds and did not allow an earned run. He struck out five and walked one.

Same Hellinger finished in relief, hurling two scoreless innings for the Bells.

Fultz was tagged with the loss in one and two-thirds innings. The lefty gave up three earned runs and five hits.

Cardenas finished 3-5 with two runs batted in on the day for the Bells.
